The Yellow House is a very small, highly specialist, independent day school based on two sites for approximately 15 pupils aged 13+ with multiple and complex needs and including Aspergers, ADHD, ODD, OCD and Tourette’s Syndrome.
The Yellow House opened in 2002 on our Sible Hedingham site. The success of the school over the years meant that our pupil numbers and our staffing increased considerably and we opened our Clare site in 2006.
The Yellow House is registered with the DfE as an Independent Special School. We are also a registered examination centre offering a wide range of externally accredited awards and examinations.
We are fully dedicated to helping pupils with difficulties whose needs have not been met elsewhere. Each pupil is carefully assessed and an education & therapeutic programme is designed fortheir specific individual requirements.
Being a day school is very important to us and we place great emphasis on the importance of a secure and supportive family life. Much of our work is done in liaison with the family as a whole and all our staff make regular home visits to discuss progress and future planning.
Our pupils are involved in all aspects of their placement and are expected to take a proactive role in their education.
We take a holistic and therapeutic approach which results in positive attitudes and moves our pupils forward in all areas of their development. Many of our pupils stay in contact after leaving The Yellow House and we are always delighted to hear about their progress.
How do students secure a place in The Yellow House?
Students can only be referred to The Yellow House by local education authorities. If you think that The Yellow House is the right place for your child, a referral has to be made by a Special Needs Officer from the LEA before any other action can be taken.
Next, the referral and all the information submitted by professionals involved with the pupil will be read and assessed for suitability by the Headteacher and her team.
At this point the family will be contacted by the school. Senior staff from The Yellow House will arrange to visit your home, to meet with you and your child to discuss our specialist provision and find out your specific needs. If the home visit is successful the pupil and parents are invited to visit The Yellow House.
At the end of the visit to The Yellow House the pupil will be asked whether they would be happy to come for an assessment . (We must stress that the responsibility to do this lies with the pupil, we would expect support from both parents and the LEA to respect their childs decision). After an assessment period of approximately 4-5 weeks,a meeting is held at The Yellow House with everyone involved and a decision is made to the suitability of the placement.
Placements are subject to regular reviews at which the student’s progress will be discussed with the family and the education authority. Students and their parents are expected to attend all review meetings.
